56 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Industry News Volume 2 For buildings other than dwellings the same provisions exist as per Volume 1 however there are additional requirements relating to ease of operation, visibility, height (See gure 2 below), and freedom from obstruction. For ease of operation light switches used by the public should have large pushpads, sockets should have separated rockers and red or green should not be used to indicate on or off. There is also a requirement for controls to visually contrast with their surrounds. This can be achieved when the light re ectance value (LRV) between two surfaces exceeds 30 points and a minimum of 20 points on surfaces with luminance levels of 200 lux. Traditionally wiring accessory manufacturers have <<< Continued from previous page >>> addressed this by offering grey back plates and white rockers however that is only one way of complying. Other colours such as a bronze plate and black rockers could also comply with this requirement. Part M Volumes 1 and 2 of the building regulations, set out requirements for ensuring that buildings are accessible and usable for all individuals, including those with disabilities. This helps to create more inclusive and safe environments for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. By following Part M, designers and installers can ensure that buildings are designed and constructed in a way that meets the needs of all users. Switch Electrical Solutions are main distributors for Crabtree products in Ireland and carry a new Crabtree range called INSTINCT which will facilitate the Part M requirements.
