As a dedicated trade magazine serving the electrical industry, we owe our success to you. Over the past couple of months, our industry has been buzzing with activity. Trade shows, Annual General Meetings, and Open Days have kept us engaged and informed. Our industry has shown its resilience, weathering various storms. However, in recent times, we have sensed a modicum of caution creeping in. The uncertainty surrounding events in Ukraine, and the situation in Israel and Palestine, have cast a shadow of concern. As we look forward to 2024, we can only hope for a positive turn of events on the political front so that we can focus our efforts on fostering Ireland's economic growth. In this issue, we take a closer look at ATC and the signi cant organisational changes that took place in 2023 (page 6). We also report on the establishment of new branches by electrical wholesalers and the emergence of a new wholesaler in Roscrea. These developments signify the industry's dynamism and potential for growth. We have a report on Gay Byrne's final address as he hands over the reigns of his Presidency of the Electrical industry Federation of Ireland to Mark Keogh (page 56). Electric.ie Magazine has been out and about, covering various events over the past two months. Demesne Electrical's 'Switched On' trade show was a remarkable gathering of industry experts and enthusiasts (page 58). Niedax CMS celebrated a remarkable 20 years in Ireland, culminating in a splendid dinner at the Rose Hotel for staff and customers from near and far, followed by an open day in their Tralee facility. The event included German cuisine, live music, and a factory/warehouse tour (page 22). We also attended the EEW trade show in Enniscorthy (page 59) and the Edmundson EV Charging day in Glasnevin (page 43). One of the highlights of this issue is a comprehensive article on AP Haslam, which delves into its illustrious history dating back to 1945. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of companies that have shaped our industry (page 15). For those with a passion for golf, we bring you the results of the EIGSI Captain's weekend (page 64). The camaraderie and sportsmanship in the electrical industry continues to shine brightly. Looking ahead, we're excited to announce the upcoming IEBA Black Tie Ball on the 17th of November at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dublin (see details on page 61). It's an event we're eagerly anticipating, and we hope to see you there. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 9 Rittal Industry News Two become one: Siemens Energy combines two technologies to stabilize the Irish grid Green energy for 9500 households The proven synchronous condenser technology uses a generator with a ywheel connected. It’s essentially a big "rotating mass“ and with its stored energy, the synchronous condenser provides power reserve, which instantly compensates for frequency uctuations and strengthens the stability of the grid. At the same time, a large-scale battery energy storage system can store or release excess renewable energy when it is needed. It provides a solution to maximize use of renewable energy, even when the wind is not blowing and with a capacity of around 160MWh the battery energy storage could supply around 9500 households with power for a full day. “Innovative technical solutions are essential if we are to combat the consequences of climate change and transition to a netzero grid. Battery storage systems will play an increasingly pivotal role in tomorrow’s global energy infrastructure,” said Tim Holt, member of the Managing Board of Siemens Energy. “By combining our proven experience in grid technology and our ability to innovate, the Shannonbridge hybrid solution will help ramp-up renewables by offering storage and stabilization technology in one connection.” Siemens Energy’s scope includes the synchronous condenser, including the ywheel which will deliver around 4000MWs of inertia onto the system, and the largescale battery energy storage system with around 160MWh as well as power conversion systems, energy management system and medium voltage equipment. The order will generate around 85m Euros for Siemens Energy and work has already begun on site. A small island with big ambitions Achieving Ireland’s climate targets will require massive investment in energy infrastructure. By combining two innovative energy solutions via one connection, Siemens Energy will deliver a exible system to help stabilize Ireland’s grid. Ireland aims to reach net-zero by 2050 and to reduce emissions by 51% by the end of the decade, so is signi cantly increasing use of renewable energy. In addition to carbon emission reduction targets, the country is also experiencing signi cantly growing electricity demand, in part due to its global digital and data hosting industry. Flexibility on offer The current market mechanism in Ireland allows operators to sell services like inertia, short circuit power and reactive power as provided by the synchronous condenser technology to the transmission system operator. To support this, Siemens Energy will also provide an energy management system allowing the customer to respond to market demands and power needs in real-time.. ‒Siemens Energy will deliver the first-ever hybrid grid stabilization and large-scale battery storage plant at Shannonbridge in Ireland. This is the first time, these two technologies have been combined into one, single grid connection to stabilize the grid and make better use of renewable energy.

The new product family consists of several four-level terminal blocks with Pushin Technology. In addition to feed-through versions, these also include function versions such as disconnect and knifedisconnect terminal blocks or sensor/actuator versions with and without LED indicator. The four-level terminal blocks have a function shaft on each level. This function shaft enables both vertical and horizontal potential distribution, thus achieving a high degree of exibility. Furthermore, the function shaft is suitable for accommodating various test accessories so that the individual terminal points can be tested quickly and easily. In addition, the terminal blocks are equipped with large marking areas, allowing the individual levels to be marked separately and providing an optimal overview. Power supply with maximum functionality: Protection in extreme environments ‒ The new Quint Power Plus version from Phoenix Contact is the solution for complex applications even under extreme ambient conditions. The power supply with a nominal output current of 40 A has a protective coating and ATEX and IECEx approval for potentially explosive areas (zone 2). With an integrated decoupling MOSFET, the power supply can be directly connected in parallel, thus increasing system availability. In addition, with its SIL 3 approval the Plus version ensures high operational safety. The Quint Power Plus version has double OVP (overvoltage protection) and thus protects the system against voltage increases. In the event of a fault, the corresponding output is switched off to protect the loads against overvoltages and the power supply connected in parallel ensures reliable supply. The possible uses primarily include applications in the process industry, shipbuilding, the energy sector, and even the railway industry. The robust input side with an input voltage of 85 V AC ... 264 V AC and an integrated gas discharge tube provides a high level of immunity (up to 6 kV) and ≥20 ms mains failure buffer time. The powerful output side with a static boost of 45 A, dynamic boost of 60 A, and SFB Technology enables easy system expansion and provides reliable starting of dif cult loads and tripping of standard miniature circuit breakers. Due to comprehensive signaling, preventive function monitoring with analog, digital, and relay contacts can report critical operating states at an early stage before faults occur. The new Plus version is rounded out by its unrivaled wide temperature range of -40°C to +75°C for use under extreme ambient conditions.
