LP Er eDI cnVi dsAiuNos nt rC ECy aNb el ews s Legrand Launches New Fire Tested Pre-galvanised Cable Ladder Legrand Legrand’s PG ladder has industry leading fire credentials, having undergone rigorous independent testing, on top of the mandatory testing to BS EN 61537. As there is no mandatory fire test for cable management systems in the UK and Ireland, the new PG ladder was put through its paces and tested to the German standard DIN4102-12 - the product showing its ability to withstand collapse for up to two hours in temperatures exceeding 1,000C. These certifications mean Legrand is able to provide a product declaration of conformity for those seeking any additional assurance. Made in Britain, PG ladder is up to 7% lighter than the hot dip galvanised version which simplifies handing and installation and contributes to reduced energy consumption during transportation. A Product Environmental Profile (PEP) is also available to demonstrate the benefits. The ladder, created with Legrand’s Faster by Design ethos, has integral couplers on all fittings, quick-fit fasteners and requires half the usual number of fastener sets making it easier and quicker to install. In addition to these physical and safety benefits, PG ladder comes with a range of digital support tools. Contractors can access a suite of BIM files that streamline design integration and project planning, making the installation process even more efficient. PG ladder is well suited to a variety of environments where uninterrupted power supply and maintaining critical infrastructure are essential. Its reliable performance, and proven fire resistance make it an attractive option for data centres, health care and other facilities where system resilience is of paramount importance. Mark Williams, Lead Marketing Manager – Cable Management at Legrand UK & Ireland, said: "For critical settings, being able to demonstrate our products’ resilience both in ambient and under fire conditions is Legrand has unveiled its new pre-galvanised (PG) ladder, a cable management solution designed to meet the growing demand for resilient cable management systems for critical facilities such as data centres. of utmost importance. That’s why we have launched a new iteration of our Swifts cable ladder, designed for use in sensitive environments and carrying the same peace of mind as that of our other systems and finishes.” With a focus on reliability, safety and ease of installation, new PG ladder reinforces Legrand’s commitment to delivering practical, dependable cable management solutions that meet modern industry demands. There are several reasons we believe there is no standard test for metallic cable management, one of which being that steel is classed by the construction industry as ‘A1,’ non-combustible and does not contribute to the spread of fire. Additionally, there have been a number of high profile fires over the years, with coroners only making recommendations which have led to standards being changed in regards to non-metallic products and supports. Harrow Court, Stevenage, in 2005, where cable collapsed due to the use of plastic cable clips, led to the introduction of BS 8519:2010. A 2010 fire at Shirley Towers, Southampton, saw the failure of the non-metallic trunking system and the premature collapse of wiring system contained within. This was instrumental to the introduction of then amendment 3 of the 17th edition of the IET wiring regulations BS 7671. Both BS 8519 and BS 7671 require the use of metallic/non-combustible supports for cables. This suggests that metallic cable management systems have performed as expected and neither failed or caused danger to life during past fire events. However, even though there is no recognised British standard to test the performance of metallic cable management systems to in the event of a fire, asset owners and consultants are regularly requesting evidential proof from contractors regarding the fire rating of the cable management systems they are planning to install. Legrand has therefore looked outside the UK to identify a test/standard that would allow us to offer a declaration of performance for our systems giving a defined time they would maintain their integrity in a fire event. Additionally, Legrand has BIM models for its products, helping our customers meet their obligations with regard to BS 8644-1:2022. Our search for a suitable European standard proved fruitless proving the UK is not alone in not having a standard to fire test cable management systems to. Without the option to test to an existing standard, we decided to use the German standard for circuit integrity cabling, DIN 4102-12, as this would allow us to test our cable management as part of a system for up to 90 minutes. The test uses a fire curve which follows the internationally agreed norm for the temperature rise in commercial/residential buildings during a fire over a 90 minute period, eventually reaching a temperature of 1,000°C at the conclusion of the test. The installation of Legrand’s Swifts and Salamandre ranges of tray, ladder and trunking all performed as expected and withstood collapse for the duration of the test.

28 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • National Rules Amendments to the National Rules for Electrical Installations Overview of Chapter 8 Introduction Amendment A1 has seen the replacement of “Annex 8 Energy Efficiency” with a new “Chapter 8 - Energy Efficiency”. The new Chapter 8 comprises two main parts: 8.1 - Energy efficiency and 8.82 - Prosumer's Electrical Installations. Each of these two main parts has associated Annexes which account for over 40% of Chapter 8. Figure 1 above shows the fundamental difference between a “consumer” shown as the dwelling on the left and a “prosumer” on the right. Both installations are supplied at LV from the grid via underground services (1) terminating in the DSO (Distribution System Operator i.e. ESB) meter cabinet and feeding onto the customer’s consumer unit (2). The dwelling on the right also has solar PV Panels (3) and is therefore both a producer and a consumer i.e. a prosumer. 8.1 - Functional aspects - Energy efficiency Part 8.1 outlines requirements and recommendation in relation to This article, the 2nd of three, deals with Chapter 8 Energy Efficiency including Prosumers Electrical installations. The requirements of Chapter 8 must not conflict with the requirements of those earlier chapters. It is applicable for both new and existing facilities and should be implemented throughout the life cycle of the facility. Part 8.1 is effectively an updated and expanded version of what was originally in Annex 8. It is broken up into 9 sections including topics such as Sectors of activities; Design requirements and recommendations; Determination of the zones, usages and meshes; Energy efficiency and load management system; Maintenance and enhancement of the performance of the installation and Parameters for implementation of efficiency measures. The primary objective is to optimize the use of electrical energy by minimizing energy losses, using electricity at the right time and at the lowest cost and maintaining the performance throughout the lifetime of the installation.
