For further information contact lighting@energia.ie . For most non-residential buildings, light constitutes a big part of the electricity bill, often as much as 20 %. Reducing this cost by 75-80 percent can however be surprisingly easy. As you have probably already guessed, the energy savings we’re talking about come from replacing fluorescent tubes with LED light sources. No surprise there. What may be somewhat more surprising, however, is that it may not even be necessary to buy new luminaires. Managing Director in Glamox, Paddy McKeon explains how: “Glamox has developed a series of industrial retrofit products that are used to upgrade old luminaires to LED without replacing the housing. The only thing that needs to be done is to replace the gear tray which takes no more time than a normal tube change.”, McKeon said. Dundrum Town Centre saves €2.4 million A good example of how efficient a retrofit solution can be, is the Dundrum Town Centre. In 2015, 4000 Glamox MIR luminaires in the car park areas were upgraded to LED. “The annual energy savings were calculated to 1.5 million kWh. Together with the reduced maintenance and running costs, this adds up to €2.4 million in savings over a 10- year period. And the payback time on the investment was less than 2 years.”, McKeon said. Of course in some cases, changing the luminaires may be the optimal choice to not only give your premises a new look but save money on your future bills in the process. Reducing energy consumption by 75 % Another success story is an energy saving project carried out in an energy saving project carried out of an office block in Burgh Quay, the four storey office building based in central Dublin was upgraded with C90 luminaires from Glamox. The lighting was sub metered before and after the upgrade and the graph shows that the daily electrical consumption drops from a weekday average of 600 kWh to just 150 kWh after the luminaires were installed.
