THE CHALLENGE A new facility for storage was being constructed, and Barrettine approached Chemical and Process Equipment Ltd as their go-to experts in the field of hazardous area installations and maintenance. The new facility was specified as a zone 1 hazardous area. The lighting installation was specified to be high efficacy LED, with low cost of ownership and minimal maintenance. Chemical and Process Equipment Ltd approached Petrel for help in choosing the most suitable product and designing the lighting scheme to ensure the correct light levels and uniformity were achieved. THE PROCESS Chemical and Process Equipment Ltd visited the site and obtained the drawings for the new building. During consultation with the client, the requested light levels and specifications were confirmed and these were passed to Petrel’s lighting design team to provide a solution. A detailed design was prepared to show a solution including an emergency lighting option hitting the vital lighting specifications. This was provided to Chemical and Process Equipment to show lighting positions to allow a full supply and installation quote to be submitted to the client. THE SOLUTION The solution used Petrel’s latest product offering, the award winning Zone 1 LED Area Light. The LED Area light offers industry leading lumen per Watt light output. Installation costs were also significantly reduced as the need for Ex d certified accessories, such as cable glands were no longer required as the Petrel LED area light uses an Ex e protection concept. These low maintenance, high output LED light sources offered a “fit and forget” solution, allowing the client to use the space without constant interruptions for routine inspections or spot and group lamp replacements. The room efficacy was reduced to a figure of 0.7W/m2/100lx whilst still hitting the average lux and a uniformity figure of 0.69 (where usually just 0.4 is deemed necessary). On top of this, the luminaire’s ability to reproduce colours accurately was 90%, the highest category available in lighting where 90- 100% is the reference for natural sunlight. This added benefit meant the client not only had enough light, but also had the right quality of light to ensure chemical colours, paint colours and safety critical labels could be read accurately bringing additional safety to the workplace.
