ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 7 AP Haslam - Certified products and services for Hazardous Areas The workshop at AP Haslam Ltd. has been providing bespoke solutions to Ireland’s electrical and construction industry for over 35 years. As Keith Haslam, General Manager of AP Haslam’s explains “By ordering preassembled enclosures from the AP Haslam workshop you can combine components from various suppliers to create the enclosure which best suits your specification and price”. “A number of years back we identified that some customers required pre-assembled enclosures for more hazardous and explosion proof environment” Keith added. This is a skilled area of assembly and by its very application can have disastrous consequences if not performed correctly. However, working with their longtime partner Weidmüller they set about a training and accreditation process for ATEX assembly. This was first achieved in 2018. This in fact made APH one of just five accredited 3rd Party Network Assembler (TPA) partners in the whole of Ireland and UK, and the only one based in Ireland. “This was a great achievement for Mark Tyson and the whole workshop team, and it has significantly added to the specialist manufacturing services we can offer at AP Haslam”, Keith enthused. But as Mark Tyson, workshop manager explains “Achieving TPA accreditation was not just a ‘one off’ effort but as part of our TPA accreditation, it is mandatory to undergo training and recertification every year”. As Leigh Wilson, AP Haslam Business Development Manager at Klippon Engineering Weidmüller stressed at a recent training session “Weidmüller is committed to providing high-quality training that meets industry standards and is delivered by experts in the field”. He added “We encourage all our accredited assemblers to attend this training programme, and I’m delighted that AP Haslam are always enthusiastic participants.” This year at Electex in the RDS on 11th & 12th Sept AP Haslam will be showcasing their ATEX junction box assembly service alongside some exciting new products in Hazardous Area Lighting from Raytec. Richie Kavanagh, Hazardous Area specialist with AP Haslam is enthusiastic about these new products that Raytec are launching at the show. “The SPARTAN Mid Power Flood & Bay Intelligent Emergency is a first of its kind on the Irish market” Richie points out. “The product is available in Zone 1/21 and Zone 2/22 variants and has IP66 and IP67 ratings for resistance to dust and water.” Richie adds. "Also being launched is the SPARTAN Recess. The next generation of recessed luminaires for hazardous areas". The EU plan to phase out all fluorescent lighting came into effect in September 2023. This places additional challenges on companies looking to replace light fittings in Zone 1 & Zone 2 areas. “The SPARTAN Recess is light weight and easy to retrofit and I’m getting great interest already from our customers” Richie adds. The third light fitting, completing the trio of new products from Raytec launching at the show is the SPARTAN Street; a new range of high-performance general area luminaires designed specifically for access roads, pathways, and building perimeters within hazardous area environments. This year AP Haslam celebrates 10 years partnership with Raytec as their exclusive hazardous area lighting supplier. Over the years AP Haslam have supplied Raytec luminaires into many of the top distilleries and pharma companies in the Ireland and as Keith explains “our success has always been built on having quality products and great service”. “Raytec not just manufacture robust long lasting products they offer a unique lighting design service for our customers” Keith adds. “This saves our customers money, as a properly designed lighting scheme will save on unnecessary fittings and avoid inflated ongoing running costs” SPARTAN products. 22 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Industry News Wood Communications: Celebrate 100 Years of Leadership in Data and telecoms infrastructure Solutions As Wood Communications Ltd celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2024, the company reflects on a remarkable journey from its modest beginnings to becoming Ireland’s leading distributor of datacomms, telecomms, security, and training products and solutions. This centennial milestone is a celebration of the company’s resilience, adaptability, and commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions in a rapidly evolving industry. The Early Years: From Cork to Dublin Founded in 1924 in Cork, Wood Communications began its journey at a time when the telecommunications industry was in its infancy. The company started with a clear vision: to provide reliable and innovative communication solutions across Ireland. This vision drove the company’s early expansion, culminating in several strategic moves within Dublin with one to the bustling Long Mile Road and eventually settling in Ballymount Dublin where we now occupy over 20000 sq ft of Warehousing and offices. This relocation marked a significant step in the company’s evolution, positioning it closer to key markets and paving the way for future growth. The 20th century was a period of monumental change, and Wood Communications navigated these changes with remarkable foresight. The company adapted to the introduction of the Euro, tackled the challenges posed by the Y2K bug, and weathered the global financial crash of 2008. Each of these events tested the company’s resilience, but they also provided opportunities to innovate and strengthen its market position. The Management Buyouts and Expansion A pivotal moment in the company’s history came in November 2007, when a management buy-out (MBO) transformed Wood Communications into a wholly Irish-owned and operated entity. This move brought new energy and direction to the company, with key figures like Keith Mahony (now Managing Director), Derek Finlay (Sales Director), and Pat Kennedy (Financial Director) taking the helm. 26 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • PEMCO Celebrating 50 Years of Progress: The Story of PEMCO's Rise to Prominence In the world of electrical manufacturing and distribution, few companies in Ireland can boast the rich history and remarkable growth that PEMCO—Progress Electroplating and Manufacturing Co. Ltd—has achieved. As the company celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024, it stands as a testament to the vision, innovation, and resilience of its founder, Joseph Tynan Snr., and the generations of Tynan's who have followed in his footsteps. The Origins: A Visionary Start PEMCO's journey began in 1974, a time when Joseph Tynan Snr., an electrician by trade, recognised a gap in the market. Unable to find earth rods for his work, Joe took it upon himself to create them. What started in a modest Bray workshop, with Joe cutting and preparing rods for galvanisation, soon grew into something far greater. The company’s name—Progress Electroplating and Manufacturing Co.—embodied Joe's early efforts in electroplating and his ambition for progress in the industry. By the mid-1980s, PEMCO had expanded into plastic manufacturing, acquiring its first tool for producing plastic flush boxes. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of PEMCO's transformation from a small operation into Ireland’s leading manufacturer of electrical components. Growth Through Innovation and Family Dedication Under Joe's leadership, and later with the support of his sons Sean, Paul, Tommy, Joey and his daughter Elizabeth, PEMCO thrived. The boys & Paddy Kavanagh, took charge of production, ensuring the factory's operations ran smoothly. Meanwhile, Joseph focused on sales, personally delivering products to wholesalers across Ireland. The company's reputation for reliability and quality began to spread, and by the 1990s, PEMCO was running 24-hour shifts to keep up with demand. The Tynan family's dedication was key to PEMCO's success. Their technical expertise kept the factory’s machines humming, while Paul’s leadership in sales drove the company's expansion into new markets. PEMCO support the Electrical Wholesale Industry & Buying Groups daily delivering a full range of Cable Management Systems, PVC Flush and Surface Boxes, Metal Boxes, Earth Rods and boxes, PVC Conduit and Accessories, Wiring Accessories, Lighting, and much more. Embracing Sustainability Like many manufacturing companies, PEMCO faced significant challenges during the late 2000s, particularly with increased competition from cheaper overseas markets. Despite the tough times, PEMCO adapted, making strategic investments in new machinery and focusing on sustainability. The recent addition of a €300,000 premium extrusion line, designed for energy efficiency and environmental protection, exemplifies the company’s forward-thinking approach. Today, PEMCO not only manufactures trunking, conduits and PVC boxes, in its state-of-the-art 20,000 sq. ft. facility in Bray but is also the only Irish company producing these essential From a Small Bray Workshop to Ireland's Leading Manufacturer: The Tynan Family's Legacy of Quality, Innovation, and Sustainability.
