ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 23 Sync EV – The future of Smart EV charging points How Sync EV started Sync EV’s roots date back to 2016, when founders, Ben Coombes and Paul Delahey were installing EV chargers as part of a government scheme, supporting homeowners in installing electric vehicle charge points in their homes. This scheme allowed installers to claim a £1,000 grant for each installation, with Sync EV being the 247th company to register for the scheme; with the list since growing to over 8,000 installers. Even with a reduction in this government grant, the demand for these systems continued to grow. Through the many installations of common brands available at the time, the small Sync EV team developed a very detailed understanding of EV chargers. It soon became apparent that there was much room for improvement with the existing solutions available on the market. Each charger had its drawbacks, and many were dif cult to install, creating issues for installers and homeowners alike. Equipped with his extensive knowledge and engagement with key stakeholders in the EV charging industry, Paul began to design and build a new EV charger. The aim was to create a solution designed by installers, for installers, ensuring the installation process and technical support were the best in class. After a number of prototypes and several design changes, the company’s EV charging system was launched to market in December 2019. The product was one of the smallest EV chargers available and included smart capability through a mobile app. Furthermore, it was backed up with market-leading technical support for both the installer and end-user. Bringing all these factors together undoubtedly contributed to the strong demand for EV charging solutions. Acquisition by Luceco Group Sync EV’s potential was clear to see, leading to the acquisition of the company by Luceco Group in March 2022. Luceco Group’s Chief Executive John Hornby explained the rationale, saying "Sync EV is a small but rapidly growing business with a strong brand and a management team with an excellent understanding of the residential EV charging product category and the professional installer. The Sync EV business will be integrated into Luceco Group’s sales and distribution operations based in Telford. The management team will remain heavily involved in the business and future product development. Now that Luceco Group has taken control of the business, the Sync EV team hopes to guide and lead the Luceco Group to even more success. Sync EV will be positioned under the BG Electrical brand and will complement key electrical products within the BG Electrical family. For the contractor, this means the acquisition will enable them to choose even more solutions from a brand they know, trust and are con dent in installing. Sync EV product range by BG Electrical The Sync EV by BG Electrical range of 7.4kw residential and commercial EV chargers will be launched to the market in June. This comprehensive range includes ve models in total – three socketed and two tethered – available in a combination of WiFi, WiFi/GSM, and WiFi/GSM and RFID options. These all offer their own bene ts; the WiFi/GSM option allows installation anywhere, while the RFID provides the facility to set up contactless payment options in commercial environments. The range will charge any electric or hybrid vehicle. The new models retain the smart functionality Sync EV is known for and are controlled through the Sync EV BG app. In addition, the charger includes a load management kit to allow for dynamic charging, ensuring the home electrical system is not overloaded, and car charging is reduced until other devices are turned off. These are excellent selling points for the contractor to secure business with. Other key bene ts to the installer include the solution’s integrated open PEN conductor protection. This removes the need to install earth rods, which in turn reduces the complexity of the installation, saving time. Integrated RCD and PEN protection is included in the unit to ensure safe installation and use. Overall, the design and easy installation features mean tting the charger typically takes just two hours. Adding extra peace of mind, the chargers are all backed up by market-leading, UK-based technical and sales support. Furthermore, products are supplied with a 3-year warranty and are DEKRA certi ed. With the joining of these two leading companies, the future for EV charging looks brighter than ever. Bringing together Sync EV’s product and technical expertise, with the backing of a large manufacturer in the electrical market, will provide a marketleading offer and additional choice for EV installers. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 29 Industry News A cleaner future beckons for the humble switchgear Electricians and electrical engineers rely on switchgear every day: it is the umbrella term for devices that control, protect and isolate power systems, and there are millions of them in operation. Switchgear provides overcurrent and short circuit protection to downstream assets, but in recent years a concern that is unconnected with operational effectiveness has come to the fore. At the root of the problem is Sulphur Hexa uoride, more commonly known as SF6, which has been used as an insulator and arc extinguisher in some medium- and high-voltage switchgear for the past 50 years. Comprising a sulphur atom and six uorine atoms, each SF6 molecule is devastatingly dangerous to the climate. Of all the greenhouse gases, it is by far the most powerful. Just 1 kg of SF6 is equivalent to 23,500 Kg of CO2 in global warming potential, and each unit of switchgear is estimated to use 2.5 kg of SF6 gas. The scale of the problem is evident. Why has industry used SF6 for so long? Scientists rst discovered how to make SF6 in industrial quantities during the 1960s - only a small amount occurs naturally. Stable, odourless, and colourless, it was used in applications as varied as insulating windows and providing the ‘bounce’ in tennis balls and vehicle tyres. As the environmental dangers of uorine gasses became apparent, however, governments started phasing them out. The EU’s legislative response to ‘F-Gasses’ included its 2015 ban on the use of SF6 in every application except switchgear, which was exempt because of its role as a critical safety feature. This exemption has had unfortunate consequences. Far from fading away, the use of SF6 in electrical switchgear has increased because it is undoubtedly a good insulator which is widely and readily available. Counterproductively, it has even found its way into applications such as wind farms which are intended to reduce global warming. Now the tide is turning, and the EU is set to announce an end to the exemption which is likely to come into effect across Europe during the mid-to-late 2020s. On 5 April 2022, the European Commission announced its proposal for a revision of the F-Gas Regulation. The proposal that relates to switchgear currently includes a transition period which would effectively place a deadline of 1 January 2026 beyond which the use of SF6 would be prohibited in primary and secondary switchgear up to 24 kV, but this is far too late in our opinion. With the fast-growing market for medium voltage switchgear likely to accelerate as Europe speeds up its transition to renewables, we believe the deadline for prohibiting the use of SF6 in primary and secondary switchgear up to 24 kV should be advanced to start as soon as the revised F-Gas Regulation comes into effect. What a ban could mean for switchgear users Well-proven alternatives are already available for switchgear rated up to 24kV. Eaton pioneered the use of SF6-free insulation methods many years ago, at much the same time as SF6 was discovered, back in the 1960s, and it seems we were ahead of the game. Our vacuum switching technology is supported by more than 200 patents and in 2020 we shipped our one millionth SF6-free mediumvoltage switchgear panel for applications up to, and including, 24 kV. We have 3,000 reference sites in 60 countries worldwide. Gratifying as this is, we know that many electricians and engineers still need encouragement to choose SF6-free switchgear. Some worry about the expense of switching, others are wary of specifying an option that is unfamiliar to them, and some believe the misconception that SF6 doesn’t much vent to atmosphere because it is heavier than air. Often, it’s a combination of all three factors that makes them reluctant to switch, but as soon as the anticipated removal of the exemption becomes law, they will have no choice but to consider alternatives, and may nd their worries were largely unfounded. ‒ Electrical switchgear sits in the background in settings as familiar as offices, shops, and hospitals, yet some of it contains SF6, one of the world’s most potent greenhouse gasses. New regulation means this is set to change, however, as Phil Kane explains. Phil Kane, Country Manager of Eaton Ireland.
