ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 11 I nLdE Du sVt Ar yNNC eE w s Ireland’s first hybridised grid-stabilisation system Ireland’s first hybridised gridstabilisation system was officially opened recently by Taoiseach Micheál Martin at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Shannonbridge, Co Offaly. The Shannonbridge B Synchronous Condenser and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which helps to significantly improve Ireland’s energy security and enhances grid resilience, is a state-of-the-art development completed earlier this year. The project was developed by Lumcloon Energy, an Irish company focused on supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon electricity system, and its partner Hanwha Group — a global leader The state-of-the-art development has the capability to export 20MW of electricity for 9 hours, significantly improving Ireland’s energy security and enhancing grid resilience. delivering large-scale, technologydriven solutions across energy, aerospace, maritime, and defence. At a special ribbon-cutting ceremony in Shannonbridge, Co Offaly, Taoiseach Micheál Martin formally opened the hybridised grid-stabilisation project, which comprises a 4,000 MVA Synchronous Condenser and a 180MW battery storage system with capacity to export up to 20MW of electricity to the national grid for 9 hours. The Synchronous Condenser technology involves a generator linked to a flywheel and possesses the capacity to store energy. This stored energy can be harnessed to mitigate frequency variations, improve system inertia and enhance grid stability. In addition, the BESS system is equipped to store surplus renewable energy, which can be released as needed onto the national grid. The Shannonbridge B system is situated adjacent to the 220kV Shannonbridge transmission station, which allows the dual technology project to enhance the dependability of renewable energy sources and enhance grid system stability. Construction work first commenced on the hybrid project in 2023 and was completed in the second half of 2025. Its growth has mirrored broader shifts in the electrical industry—from traditional distribution equipment to smart, connected infrastructure supporting the energy transition. The emergence of electric mobility has been a particularly defining chapter. GARO entered the EV charging space as early as 2008 with experimental charging concepts, long before mass-market adoption, positioning itself as an early mover in a now critical sector. A Longstanding Presence in Ireland While GARO’s global story begins in Sweden, its Irish journey is equally significant. The company has been active in Ireland for over four decades, building a strong foothold in a market that has undergone rapid transformation in recent years. Operating from its base in Dublin, GARO Ireland supports electrical wholesalers, panel builders, contractors and consulting engineers across the country. Its role is not simply that of a supplier; it acts as a technical partner, offering product expertise and responding to evolving regulatory and energy efficiency requirements. Few companies in the European electrical sector can claim a heritage that stretches back to the early days of electrification itself. Founded in 1939 in Gnosjö, Sweden, GARO Group began as a small-scale manufacturer rooted in Scandinavian engineering traditions. Over the decades, it has evolved into a leading European supplier of electrical installation materials and EV charging solutions, driven by a consistent focus on safety, durability and innovation. Recent growth reflects both market demand and the company’s ambition locally. GARO Ireland now employs over 40 people, underlining the scale of its operations. This expansion has been matched by investment in infrastructure, with the company having almost doubled its warehouse space to improve availability and responsiveness across its product range. People at the Core Behind GARO’s Irish operation is a growing and highly specialised team. The company places strong emphasis on technical knowledge, with staff supporting customers through specification, installation and aftersales service. This hands-on approach reflects a wider company ethos: combining manufacturing capability with practical, on-the-ground expertise. A particularly notable capability lies within its Dublin-based consumer unit division, where nine dedicated staff focus on the assembly of boards. This team is ideally positioned to deliver bespoke or special requirement consumer units within short lead times. An increasingly valuable service as project specifications become more complex and time-sensitive. The Irish team works closely with both local stakeholders ensuring that products meet regional standards while benefiting from international R&D. This balance, local responsiveness backed by global resources, has been key to GARO’s longevity in the market. Northwest Business Park, Dublin. An extremly busy sales office. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 17 Industry News Three Pillars of Product Innovation At the heart of GARO’s offering are three core product categories: Electrification, EV/Renewables, and Industrial Plugs & Sockets. Together, they form a comprehensive ecosystem for modern electrical infrastructure. Electrification This category encompasses a wide range of distribution products, including consumer units, enclosures, circuit protection devices and switchgear. Designed for residential, commercial and industrial applications. The presence of a dedicated assembly team in Dublin further enhances its ability to respond quickly to customer-specific requirements. eMobility/Renewables Perhaps the most dynamic area of growth, GARO’s EV/Renewables division delivers solutions ranging from domestic wallboxes to largescale commercial charging systems. The company’s early investment in EV infrastructure has translated into a mature product offering that supports everything from single-home installations to motorway charging hubs. Now, this category is evolving further. GARO is on the cusp of launching a range of battery storage solutions, reflecting the convergence of electric vehicle technology and renewable energy systems. This expansion signals a broader strategic shift. From simply enabling EV charging to supporting integrated energy ecosystems that include storage and load management. Industrial Plugs and Sockets Completing the portfolio is a robust range of industrial connectivity products, including CEE plugs, sockets and associated components. These are designed for demanding environments where reliability and safety are critical, such as manufacturing, construction and heavy industry. The Irish Management Team: John Wade, Project Manager: Matt Tierney, Sales Manager and Procurement: Derek Elward, National Sales Manager; John Weldon, Switchgear and Renewables Manager: Karen Quinlan, Financial Controller (Right). Looking ahead In Ireland, where climate targets and infrastructure demands are intensifying, the company’s blend of international scale and local expertise offers a compelling proposition. From assembling key products domestically to supporting complex EV and renewable energy deployments, GARO is not just participating in the transition, it is helping to enable it. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 19 L E D VAGNRCAEN T Supporting Electrical Contractors with Smarter Heating Design and Controls Getting heating design right from the start makes a real difference once a project reaches the building site. For electrical contractors, accurate heating system design provides a clearly defined specification, supporting the coordination of wiring, zoning and control integration whilst helping to avoid on-site queries and late-stage revisions. As air-to-water heat pumps are more widely specified across new-build and residential projects, early understanding of system design and control strategy is becoming increasingly important. Close collaboration at design stage supports smoother installation and commissioning, whilst ensuring systems operate as intended once occupied. Grant has advanced its digital design software used as part of the company’s Heating Design & Specification Service. The upgraded software enables Grant’s technical team to respond more efficiently to design enquiries, producing clearer, more detailed outputs, particularly on larger or more complex residential projects. As part of the free-of-charge service, Grant’s technical specialists carry out in-depth room-by-room heat-loss calculations, accurate sizing for radiators or underfloor heating systems, and complete pipework circuit layouts. Annotated schematics and layout drawings provide a clear heating system specification that can be reviewed and approved at an early stage, allowing electrical contractors to plan control wiring, zoning layouts and commissioning requirements more effectively. The calculation engine produces consistent, independently verified outputs, supporting alignment with recognised industry standards. The design service also supports compliance requirements, including the production of S.R. 50/MCScompliant heat-loss documentation, helping ensure heating systems are designed to meet relevant building regulations and NZEB performance requirements. At the centre of many new-build specifications is the Grant Aerona R290 air-to-water heat pump. Designed specifically for the Irish and UK climate conditions, the Aerona R290 uses natural refrigerant R290, which has a Global Warming Potential of just 3. With output sizes ranging from 4kW to 16kW, the range offers flexibility across a wide variety of property types. The Aerona R290 heat pump is operated by the Grant Aerona Smart Controller, which supports system performance through integrated control strategies. As a weather-compensated controller, it monitors outdoor temperatures and adjusts system operation to work at optimum efficiency. Quick and easy to install, the controller features user-friendly controls that allow homeowners to easily manage heating schedules, domestic hot water timings and room temperatures whilst installers can access system performance data to assist with diagnostics where required. For electrical contractors, understanding how smart controls interact with heat pump systems is essential. The Aerona Smart Controller works alongside room thermostats to provide advanced communication with the heat pump, adjusting output based on real-time demand rather than simply switching systems on or off. This supports improved system performance and helps ensure that heating systems operate efficiently once installed. By combining detailed system design with intelligent control, Grant’s integrated approach supports effective coordination between heating system design and electrical installation. Through clear specification, structured design outputs and responsive control strategies, project teams can deliver compliant, efficient and future-ready heating systems across modern residential developments.
