Printed by W&G Baird Friday 17th, November 2023 Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin As we approach the end of 2024 we are pleased to be marking 12 years of successful publication for ELECTRIC.IE And what a vibrant, fast-paced year it has been for our industry overall! With ongoing Tech Talks, a bustling calendar of trade shows, and a wide range of industry events, 2024 has brought exceptional momentum to the Irish electrical sector. Business reports are strong, and all signs indicate that this positive trajectory will continue into 2025. Biggest highlight of the season is just around the corner—the IEBA Winter Ball, annual event taking place on November 15th at the Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge. This year’s 007 James Bond theme promises an unforgettable evening of elegance and celebration. The Winter Ball remains one of the industry’s most anticipated gatherings, a festive tradition that brings professionals together in support of the Irish Electrical Benevolent Association. This spirit of community was also on full display on September 20th at the inaugural “Dash of the Derg.” Over 200 industry professionals took to their bikes, pedalling the picturesque route around Lough Derg, to raise funds for the IEBA. With over €30,000 collected so far, this cycling event not only showed the strength of our community but also set a promising precedent for future editions. ELECTRIC .IE was delighted to be on the ground to capture memories of a very enjoyable day. Congratulations to all who supported this day. The year has also seen significant shifts within the sector, with new faces and strategic developments across several companies. Hager welcomes Luke Killeen as their new Sales Engineer (see page 7), and Unicrimp Ireland brings on Keith Nealon as their new Area Sales Manager (page 10). Legrand’s recent membership in EMDA ( Electrical Distributors and Manufacturers Association), coupled with the opening of their Dublin office and showroom, marks an exciting time for the company (also on page 10). In addition, ATC has launched an Energy Efficient Showroom and Academy, showcasing their commitment to education and sustainable technology (page 12). Inter-Konnect has just released a brand-new catalogue, and we’ve also covered ABB’s Innovation Day 2024 (page 21). On a regulatory front, we note a critical update from the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). The release of I.S. 10101:2020+A1:2024—an important amendment to the National Rules for Electrical Installations—is now fully published in Iris Oifigiúil. As we reflect on an eventful year, we are grateful to our readers, partners, and contributors who continue to make Electric.ie a trusted voice in the industry. Here’s to more growth, innovation, and connection in the year ahead. We wish all our supporters, advertisers and readers a happy and prosperous new year. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 7 New Sales Engineer Brings a Fresh Energy to Hager Ireland Starting out as a Customer service and technical support executive after returning from Australia, Luke quickly found his footing by engaging with key industry players such as wholesalers and engineers. Learning from the best, including former Head of Technical, Tom Weafer, and completing his degree in electrical engineering, Luke soon moved into the role of Technical and Market Manager. It was here that his enthusiasm for sales began to grow, as he supported the sales team by offering technical solutions that directly addressed customers' needs. "My journey from electrician to engineer, and now into sales, has given me a wellrounded view of the challenges our customers face. That experience enables me to offer valuable solutions that go beyond the basics,” Luke explains. “I’m excited to build relationships and grow the Hager brand with a deep understanding of the technical and human side of the business." Luke also highlights the importance of communication in sales, noting that success comes from truly listening to customers, understanding their goals, and working together to find the right solutions. It’s an approach shaped by his years of hands-on experience, both in the field and behind the scenes. Despite the demands of his role, Luke is passionate about maintaining a healthy worklife balance. With two young children keeping him busy outside of work, he emphasises the importance of being able to switch off outside of business hours, taking a mental break in the evenings and on weekends to help stay focused and energised for the challenges and solutions that lie ahead. Kevin Curran, Head of Sales, commented, "We’re delighted to have Luke join the external sales team. Whenever possible, we believe in promoting from within". Looking forward, Luke is excited to strengthen relationships with Hager’s existing customer base and identifying new opportunities for growth. While Hager has long had a strong presence in the domestic / commercial sectors, Luke sees significant potential in the commercial market, particularly with some fabulous new product launches on the horizon. In the coming years, Luke envisions Hager continuing its market leadership, providing innovative solutions across the electrical industry. He hopes to play a key role in that journey, becoming a trusted partner to wholesalers, contractors, and engineers alike. "I can’t wait to get started," he says, with an unmistakable sense of enthusiasm for new opportunities and partnerships. Luke Killeen, Hager Ireland’s newly appointed Sales Engineer, is ready to take the reins, blending years of technical expertise with a passion for customer relationships. Having joined Hager in 2015, Luke has built a career across multiple roles, from customer service to technical management, before making the transition to sales. Luke Killeen, Hager Sales Engineer. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 9 Industry News Updated phase-out dates for the manufacture and export of certain general lighting lamps The revised EU Mercury Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1849), published on 10 July 2024 introduces a revised timeline for the phase-out of manufacturing and export of some mainstream mercury-containing lighting products which is stricter than the UN Minamata Convention timelines. It should be noted that the RoHS Directive and the Ecodesign Regulation for lighting products set earlier deadlines for import and placing on the EU internal market. Under the new EU mercury amendments, six mercurycontaining lamps will be made subject to a manufacturing and export ban from 31 December 2025 and 31 December 2026: • Linear Triband phosphor lamps for general lighting from the end of 2026. • Non-linear Triband phosphor lamps from the end of 2026. • Linear Halophosphate phosphor lamps for general lighting from the end of 2025. • Non-linear Halophosphate phosphor lamps from the end of 2025. • Compact fluorescent lamps for general lighting from the end of 2025. • Certain high-pressure sodium lamps for general lighting purposes (those exceeding certain mercury levels) from the end of 2025. Note that other HPS lamps will continue to be permitted. These six lamp families represent the vast majority of mercury used in the market in lighting products. However, other lamp types for general lighting and specialpurpose applications (e.g. MH lamps, UV lamps, emergency lamps, etc.) are still allowed, because of their dedicated functions, specifications and/ or spectra and the lack of appropriate LED alternatives which is the basis for the current RoHS exemptions. Note that certain products and applications are excluded from the EU Mercury regulation: 1. Switches and relays, cold cathode fluorescent lamps and external electrode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs and EEFLs) for electronic displays and measuring devices, when they are used to replace a component of larger equipment and provided that no feasible mercury-free alternative for that component is available, in accordance with Directive 2000/53/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and Directive 2011/65/ EU. 2. The prohibitions shall not apply to any of the following mercury-added products: (a) products that are essential for civil protection and military uses; (b) products for research, for calibration of instrumentation, or for use as a reference standard. Disclaimer This statement is not an official interpretation and is not binding on LightingEurope members, who are not responsible for any errors or omissions. The Small Benefit Scheme is a statutory tax relief scheme offered by Revenue that allows employers to provide a tax-exempt benefit to Irish employees. Budget 2025 - Small Benefit Scheme Changes The value of this was up to €1,000 per year, but it was announced in Budget 2025 that from 1st January 2025 that this amount will be increased to €1,500. More than 1,000 installations have been confirmed so far in Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Offaly, Waterford, Wicklow and the Dublin City Council area. Funding has now been approved to proceed with solar PV installations on all remaining eligible schools in 16 counties – Carlow, Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, The scheme provides eligible schools with up to 6 kilowatts peak of roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) installations on their roofs, which equates to approximately 14 solar panels. Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Westmeath and Wexford. This means that up to 4,000 primary, post-primary and special schools in the country are now eligible for PV panels. The Solar for Schools Programme is funded by the Government’s Climate Action Fund in line with the Government’s recognition that taking action on climate change is central to Ireland’s social and economic development. It is assisting schools in reducing their energy costs and carbon footprint as part of the response to meeting the 2030 and 2050 Climate Action Plan targets for the schools’ sector. The solar PV panels in schools are being connected to the electricity grid, so that solar energy can power other homes and businesses when schools are closed at weekends and during school holidays. The typical amount a school can save will depend on a number of factors. However, by way of example, a school with a 6 kW Solar PV installation could expect to save in the region of €1200-1600 per annum on their bill, including credit for their electricity export.

With a nominal cross-section of 2.5 mm² and a nominal current of 24 A at a nominal voltage of 800 V, the terminal blocks cover a wide range of applications. The tool-free direct-connection technology saves time during conductor connection, while the compact design enables efficient wiring in confined spaces. Due to the spring construction, the terminal blocks provide high conductor pull-out forces and the function slots on each level ensure New versions for contactless power and real-time Ethernet data transmission The achievable range is doubled to up to 100 mm during communication due to the particularly high-performance wireless boards. The parallel connection of two NearFi coupler paths enables either double the power transmission (up to 100 W) or the transmission of two electrically isolated voltages (50 W US/UA each). The IP65 devices feature new standardized M12 connections (L-/D-coded) with duo contour. This ensures flexible field wiring with classic M12 screw connectors or pushpull fast-locking. NearFi is a contactless real-time transmission technology. It allows the transmission of power and The new versions of the NearFi couplers from Phoenix Contact make it possible to double the range for wireless data transmission. In addition, they provide double the power for automatic current compensation or the forwarding of two electrically isolated voltages (US/UA) with parallel connection. data across an air gap. Thanks to protocol-independent and latencyfree Ethernet communication, it opens up flexible application options for all Ethernet protocols up to 100 Mbps. This means that wear-prone connections and slip rings in industrial applications can be easily replaced and downtime costs can be minimized. Successful data exchange is indicated by an LED ring that provides all-round visibility from every position. In this way, the NearFi couplers can be put into operation as easily as a connector. In the factory of the future, there will no longer be any physical connections in moving applications. Production downtimes due to bent or worn contacts are a thing of the past. Robots change tools quickly and efficiently. Automated guided vehicle systems receive their transport orders contactlessly. The use of multi-level terminal blocks offers huge potential savings when it comes to the space required in the control cabinet. The new and particularly compact PT 2,5-4L four-level terminal block series with Push-in Technology from Phoenix Contact is a space-saving solution for mounting terminal strips. a high degree of flexibility. They enable both vertical and horizontal potential distribution and the accommodation of various test accessories. In addition, the terminal blocks are equipped with large marking areas, allowing the individual levels to be marked separately and providing an optimal overview. The new fourlevel terminal blocks are part of the Clipline complete terminal block system and are therefore compatible with standardised accessories from Phoenix Contact, which reduces logistics costs.
