The Irish Government’s approval of the drafting of the Private Wires Bill marks an important step towards enabling private investment in electricity infrastructure. This milestone reflects the remarkable pace of growth in Ireland’s renewable energy sector. Since our first solar farm was energised in April 2022, national capacity has expanded to 2.1 GW, supported by over 155,000 rooftop installations across homes, farms and businesses. At its summer peak, solar supplied more than 21 per cent of national electricity demand – equivalent to powering one in five light bulbs in Ireland. Darragh O’Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, welcomed the achievement as a clear sign of progress: "This is a milestone that every community in Ireland can share in. Solar energy is now part of daily life, powering homes, farms, and businesses across the country and helping to cut bills and emissions alike. Passing 2 GW shows what’s possible when Government, system operators, and industry work together towards a shared goal. Ireland’s clean-energy future isn’t decades away – it’s happening now." John O’Connor, Head of Programme Delivery at ESB Networks, noted the scale of the national effort to integrate new renewable generation and modernise Ireland’s grid: "ESB Networks is very proud that Ireland has reached this milestone. Announced by Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien, the bill is designed to complement the national grid while providing flexibility for electricity users and developers. Private wires allow electricity to flow directly between a generator and a user, bypassing parts of the public grid. The new legislation will permit private wires in four specific scenarios: • Connecting a single electricity user to a separate generation asset, including storage. • Enabling hybrid connections that combine private generation with the grid. • Supporting on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions. • Allowing self-supplying customers to provide power to neighbouring premises. For electrical contractors, distributors, and installers, the bill could unlock significant new opportunities. Projects previously constrained by grid availability— such as site-specific renewable installations, storage systems, and EV charging networks—may now proceed more easily. Hybrid connections and self-supply arrangements create additional avenues for work in installation, Legislation to unlock private electricity connections, supporting renewables, storage, and EV infrastructure. maintenance, and consultancy services. Minister O’Brien highlighted the benefits, saying: "Private wires will allow for private investment in electricity infrastructure, particularly renewable energy and storage, while ensuring the national grid remains the primary route for connections." The Private Wires Policy Statement, approved in July 2025, underpins the bill. It prioritises safe, technically robust development, encourages renewable energy and storage deployment, and promotes costeffective EV charging solutions. Public consultations in 2023 informed the framework, drawing input from renewable developers, electricity users, environmental groups, and farming associations. A regulatory impact assessment also assessed costs, benefits, and system-wide impacts. The bill aligns with broader government initiatives, including the Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan and the Climate Action Plan 2025. Both strategies identify private wires as a way to relieve grid constraints, boost renewables uptake, and support Ireland’s transition to a climate-neutral energy system. For trade professionals, the Private Wires Bill signals an expanding market. Contractors and distributors can expect new opportunities in project delivery, system design, and ongoing maintenance, particularly for hybrid generation setups, storage installations, and EV charging solutions. As the legislation moves forward, regulators and system operators will ensure private wires meet high safety and technical standards and integrate smoothly with the national grid. The Regulatory Impact Assessment and Heads of Bill are available on the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment’s website for interested parties who want to follow developments. In short, the Private Wires Bill promises to open new business opportunities, enable flexible electricity solutions, and support Ireland’s clean energy ambitions— making it a development the electrical sector will want to watch closely. With the association approaching its 25th anniversary year, the event provided a fitting opportunity to celebrate Ireland’s electrical community. While pensions may not traditionally sit at the top of the agenda for the electrical sector, the launch marks a significant shift for thousands of electrical contractors, SMEs and their workforce across the country. MyFutureFund is designed to address a long-standing gap in retirement provision. More than 760,000 employees in Ireland are currently not actively contributing to a workplace pension or PRSA through payroll. Many of these workers are employed in sectors dominated by small and medium-sized businesses, including electrical contracting, maintenance, and services. Over time, the Government expects the scheme to grow to cover millions of employees. From an employer perspective, the headline message is simplicity. Unlike traditional occupational pension schemes, MyFutureFund removes most of the administrative burden. NAERSA takes responsibility for enrolling eligible employees, collecting contributions, managing investments and providing customer support. For electrical contractors already grappling with compliance, skills shortages and rising costs, this centralised approach is likely to be welcome. Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary described MyFutureFund as “truly revolutionary”, highlighting that it allows employers to support their workforce’s long-term financial security without having to design or manage a pension scheme themselves. Contributions are shared between employee, employer and the State and will be phased in gradually to ease the financial impact. From 2026 to 2028, employees and employers will each contribute 1.5% of gross pay, with the State adding a further 0.5%. These rates will rise incrementally over the following decade, reaching 6% employee and employer contributions, plus a 2% State top-up from 2035 onwards. The scheme’s structure means relatively modest employee contributions can quickly add up. Using the Government’s example of a 25-year-old full-time worker on minimum wage, an employee contribution of €8.49 per week is matched by the employer, with the State adding a further €2.83. After fees, almost €19.30 per week is invested for retirement — more than double the employee’s own contribution before any investment growth. For employees in the electrical sector, many of whom may move between employers over the course of their careers, MyFutureFund also offers portability. All savings are the personal property of the participant, with no vesting period. Contributions and investment returns stay with the worker, regardless of job changes. The launch also coincides with the opening of the MyFutureFund participant portal. Using a verified MyGovID, employees can view contributions from themselves, their employer and the State, track investment returns, and manage their participation. Options include opting out at specific intervals, suspending contributions, or adjusting investment strategies. Workers who are not automatically enrolled — such as those under 23, over 60 or earning below the threshold — can also opt in voluntarily.

He joined Eastern Electrical in Dublin as Purchasing Manager, later taking on a similar role with OBF Distribution. His experience and leadership saw him progress to General Manager of ICD, part of the Edmundson Electrical Group, before moving into a role as Manager of Edmundson Electrical Dublin. In 2005, Dave co-founded Ledburn Cables with Jack Ledwidge.
