6 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Phoenix Contact 2023 - Phoenix Contact celebrates the 100th anniversary of its foundation in Essen (Germany) as a commercial agency for industrial products. The family-run company has evolved with products and solutions for the electrification, networking, and automation of all sectors of the economy and infrastructure. A century full of passion for technology and innovation, Phoenix Contact continues to drive forward as a global manufacturing company with a commitment to the sustainable development of habitats and economic spaces on our planet. “We have achieved a great deal over the years together, remaining true to the values and culture of our family business even as we have grown and evolved. This anniversary is a special moment for us. We have built the foundation upon which we can now continue on our path into the future. Together with our customers and business partners, we will drive forward solutions for the energy revolution that are the basis for a sustainable world,” said Phoenix Contact CEO Frank Stührenberg, describing the signi cance of the 100th anniversary. Connections between people and technologies Good connections are more than just an elementary feature of Phoenix Contact products. They were also the basis for transforming the idea of businessman Hugo Knümann into a globally active industrial company. With the founding of Phönix Elektro- und IndustriePhoenix Contact -100 years of passion for technology and innovation Bedarfsgesellschaft in Essen in 1923, the company initially started out as a pure sales company. In 1928, the business connection with RWE led to the invention of the rst terminal block on a DIN rail. This gave Knümann the idea of separating the blocks and arranging them individually to form terminal blocks on a DIN rail. Another far-reaching personal and entrepreneurial connection was established in 1949. Knümann met Josef Eisert, a development engineer at Siemens, who took over the company in 1953 after Knümann passed away. From Blomberg to the world With the arrival of Eisert, the company underwent a fundamental change. The pure trading company became a company with its own production. At the Blomberg location, where the company had to be relocated during the war, a tool shop, plastics production, screw turning shop, assembly facilities, metalworking shop, warehouse, and logistics were soon established. After the relocation, many new products were being developed and the portfolio increasingly expanded in the direction of electronics. With the innovative Interbus eldbus system, the basis for industrial networking followed in 1987. The decisive step towards automation was taken. After the establishment of the rst foreign subsidiary in the USA in 1981, further subsidiaries followed. Today, the sales markets are not just in Germany, but all over the world. 8 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Siemens In my role I get involved in many discussions where the subject of smart buildings is raised. People have an impression of what a smart building is, and it is often some futuristic vision of a prestigious building in a major city using the latest IOT technologies with all the building services working together in harmony. This tends to imply a certain scale to the building, whether it’s a mixed-use skyscraper in a major city or a brand-new sports stadium. But is it only large-scale buildings meet the criteria, or can any building be smart? No is my answer to this. Let me de ne what I think a smart building is. It’s one that meets the needs on the owners and the occupants in the most optimum way. It should deliver a safe, comfortable, energy ef cient environment that accentuates the wellbeing of the building users. The Energy Performance of Buildings directive (EPBD) commits EU member countries to reduce energy consumption ‒ Howard Wilson, Building Product Lead, Siemens Ireland. Can all buildings be Smart? and deliver on carbon neutral targets. Around 40% of all energy consumption is in buildings which makes this such a key area. Key is measuring and monitoring not only internal temperature conditions but also air quality and then using this information to deliver the best possible conditions. It’s not enough to just measure there must be management. This is where controls will play a major part. Building Management Systems (BMS) and controllers are scalable right down to units which only have a few input and output connections but still deliver powerful control solutions. They are IP enabled allowing remote connection and management. This allows potential problem areas to be identi ed quickly and recti ed with no detriment to the occupant experience. At Siemens Building Products we have a comprehensive product portfolio that can help to turn the smart building dream into reality. We pride ourselves in the quality of our product range and offer a ve-year warranty on all our products. To start with sensors are key to the system. We offer a range of accurate and versatile sensors that measure all the relevant media within buildings including temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and air quality including CO2 and VOC (volatile organic compounds). Our sensors use industry standard signals allowing seamless integration. Modbus and KNX versions are also available. High accuracy versions for use in speci c applications such as pharmaceutical and data centres are available. Our new multi sensor has seven different sensing elements in the one unit; temperature, relative Howard Wilson, Building Products Lead, Siemens Ireland.
ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 9 Rittal Siemens humidity, CO2, noise, light, VOC, and ne dust (PM2.5). These environmental factors are required to be tracked to meet building certi cations such as WELL, FITWEL and LEED. The multi sensor has a digital display which enables the building occupants to know what the actual conditions are. It can either be used as a wired or wireless device. The wired option allows the connection via the standard communication BACnet to a BMS controller. The wireless option uses the LoRaWan protocol to connect to other IOT devices. The sensor can be applied to both existing and new buildings, the wireless option makes it ideal for retro ts. More wireless sensors will be available shortly. The key then is what to do with this data. We have a range of control options. Connect Box offers an IOT solution. It connects all your devices in your building whether wired or IOT leveraging multiple industry standard protocols including LoRaWan, BACnet, M-Bus and many more. Data can then be taken to an existing BMS or a cloud application. Our Desigo BMS system is the integrated building management platform for managing highperforming buildings. With its open design, it has been developed to create comfortable, safe, and ef cient facilities. It is easily scalable from simple single-discipline systems to fully integrated buildings. The Desigo PXC controllers achieve high performing control of buildings. Designed to reduce the energy consumption of building plants, the Desigo PXC controllers enable you to integrate different protocols with no need of additional hardware or software. Our GAMMA system uses the KNX protocol and controls both HVAC and lighting It helps to reduce system complexity and create the ideal solution for perfect indoor conditions with reliable, easy to install products. Key to system performance is user operation. We offer attractive user interfaces including the Touch TC5 which won the KNX product award 2022. Its elegant design, intuitive operation and customisation options provide an all-in-one operation unit. So, when looking how best to manage your building don’t let the size of it put you off. Smart buildings don’t have to be big, complex, and expensive they just need to deliver the best possible environment for the people that use them. And Siemens Building Products can be your single source to deliver the products that meet these requirements. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 13 Industry News The not-for-profit compliance scheme for electrical and battery recycling made the call along with Ministers Ossian Smyth and Pippa Hackett, as figures reveal almost 500 tonnes of waste farm fence batteries have been collected for recycling since 2019. Around 10% of the overall batteries collected by WEEE Ireland are farm fence batteries, and last year it collected and recycled 125 tonnes, 15% more than the 108 tonnes collected in 2021. Leo Donovan CEO WEEE Ireland, Minister Ossian Smyth and Minister Pippa Hackett pictured with WEEE Ireland’s new Farm Fence Battery Collection Crate, at recent tour of KMK Metals Recycling EPA-licensed facilities in Tullamore WEEE Ireland has operated a scheme for the takeback and management of waste batteries in Ireland since 2008, when the European Batteries Directive came into force. “Like many other sectors, the Agri sector and their battery suppliers will be impacted by forthcoming new EU battery regulations this summer, which will update and replace the current rules,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland. This includes a significant increase in collection targets to drive even better recycling and resource recovery efficiency. The heavier types of batteries from farms will be essential to ensuring Ireland reaches its targets, and WEEE Ireland is committed to helping the agricultural sector by providing a convenient and free recycling solution.” WEEE Ireland reminds the agricultural sector to recycle farm fence batteries as new EU regulations approach In the context of the European Green Deal, the new Battery framework aims to pave the way for sustainable batteries supporting a more circular and climateneutral economy. Key changes are the shift from a Directive to a Europe-wide Regulation, as well as new requirements for social responsibility and environmental sustainability covering the entire lifecycle of batteries and not just their end-of-life waste phase. WEEE Ireland says it is crucial to recycle all waste batteries correctly as they may contain harmful substances that can result in heavy metals and chemicals leaching into the environment, contaminating water and soil sources and affecting wildlife, livestock and humans. Farm fence batteries can be dropped off for free recycling at any local authority recycling centres or where they were purchased for collection by WEEE Ireland. Suppliers of farm fence batteries are also required to accept these batteries back for free recycling from their customers. As the not-for-pro t compliance scheme representing farm fence battery importers, WEEE Ireland is calling on all co-ops and distributors to the Agri Sector to participate in this free collection program. New Farm Fence Battery crates are available to co-ops and Agri supply companies to facilitate the recycling of old farm fence batteries. To ensure safe recycling, batteries should be shrink-wrapped or strapped to the pallet prior to collection. ‒WEEE Ireland is urging the agricultural sector to recycle all waste batteries, especially farm fence batteries, as new legislation due later this year is expected to increase collection targets from 45% to 63% by 2027.
